I make them more challenging by trying to complete them in one try. In other words I don't hit the paint button until I think I've got them all right! Sometimes I can do it, sometimes I can't, but it does make it more fun so that I do all sizes of puzzles.

Yes, indeed, that does increase the challenge. Note that nonograms were originally played on paper (in fact you can still buy paper versions), and of course the paper versions had no button you could press to tell you if you were doing it right or not. You only knew you were right when you found the final solution.
