Hi all,

Is there anyway to tell when a character will level up?

Like some way to find out current points, points to next level and points earned in each encounter.

Fantastic game, keep up the great work!

Regards, PepperHead

While I am sure John will post in this thread very quickly, I just wanted to say welcome to the game and welcome to the forums. You will love it here.

Oubliette isnt a typical RPG where you gain XP. It uses a system of probability to determine when you will level. For example, In average games, you can will Lvl 1 monsters all day long and gain a set amount of experience, while Oubliette uses a percentage chance to level. If you are fighting a Lvl 1 monster on floor 1, you have a set percentage chance to level on kills and damage taken. As you get higher levels, that percentage goes down but never reaches total zero. This leaves you with the options of go further down and have a higher chance to level, or sit upstairs and grind all day and try to win the lottery.

I hope this explains it, and if you have any further questions please ask. The people here are very friendly and love to help, especially John Gaby himself. He is amazing!

Hellion explained it pretty well. Each time you kill a monster OR get hit (or killed) by a monster you have a chance to make a level. The probability is a function of your level, the monster's level and the level of the dungeon you are on. The only other way to level is for thief types to disarm trapped boxes. In this case the chance to make level is dependent on your level, the type of trap and the level of the dungeon you are on. Note that you can make at most 2 levels per dungeon trip and you do not actually get the new level until you return to the Castle and rest.

Level increases upon being awarded experience points (colloquially referred to as "XP"). Experience points are rewarded by completing tasks outlined by NPCs or by killing hostile foes. In The Elder Scrolls, character level increases on a 1 by 1 basis each time a certain quota of skill levels are achieved. Skills, alternatively, are leveled by performing actions governed by the skill. For example, Security in Oblivion increases when locks are successfully picked or when lockpicks break. Magic, such as Alteration can cause level up when a certain number of Alteration spells, such as Feather, are cast. The same rings true for combat and all other skills.

Huh? How did you find your way here, since you seem to be talking about a completely different game. None of what you are saying applies to Oubliette.

Well there is no way to find out your 'current points' because, as mentioned previously in this thread, there is NO experience counter. Unlike many RPG games you have played, that is not how leveling works in Oubliette. Each time you kill a monster, a 'probability' number is computed which depends on your class, race, level, the monster's level, and the level of the dungeon you are on. Then a random number is generated from 1 to that 'probability', and if that number is '1', then you make level.

For example, if the 'probability' number for a particular kill computed to be, say, 1000, that would mean that killing that monster would give you 1 chance in a 1000 to make level. If the 'probability' number computed to 100, then you would have 1 chance in 100 of making level. Note that you also have a chance to make level when you are hit (or killed) by a monster, but those probabilities are lower than when you kill. Note also that thief types can also make levels by disarming trapped boxes.

So how do people level Peasants up when they're so weak? Kill them? o.O

The first couple of levels are the toughest. What I do is get him the best armor and weapon you can (they can wear leather if I recall correctly). You need to have a mage that can cast Narpic (darkenss). Put him up front and have him be the only one fighting (your mage can summon him a companion if you like). Then choose your encounters very carefully. If you face anything that is likely to kill him in one blow, use the mage to cast darkness to end the battle and then cure him. Otherwise let him fight and if he gets hit even once, use the mage to end the battle. It will usually take only a couple of kills to get him his first level (peasants level FAST). Once you have a few levels under your belt, he will have enough hits to be able to go toe to toe with most anything you find on level 1 (at least for a few rounds). Continue using the mage to end the battle when he is in any danger of being killed.

Cheers. 37 dead and counting so far. Managed to luck out and roll an Elf Ranger, so that's one out of the way. Need 1 more.

BTW, is it possible to control what stats are gained when a Peasant levels up? Or is it random/dependant on race?

If you are willing to use portal gems (which is a bit of a cheat) you can control them to some extent. Before you level, create a portal. Then after you level, if the stats you wanted didn't increase, you can restore and try again.
