This discussion is directed at end game players.

I am rounding the bend on lvl 30 for most of my meleers and in the process wanting to help my lower level casters to catch up a little. They are mostly in their lower 20s and a making me mad at how slow and difficult they are to level. I am pretty sure It has to do with my race/class selection and I was hoping you guys could shed some light on end game usage.

I currently have a Elf Sage that has become a BEAR to level up. 1) is this a bad overall choice seeing as they really are so much experience to level, 2) I should expect him to be lower level due to his versatility, or 3) try and level him on the more lower levels. As of right now, Every time I see a lvl 17 or above on floor 5, I let my sage hit it first, to try and maximize the experience. Are there any tips that would make this easier?

I also have an Elf Ranger (beta) and he is also rediculous to level up. I still have him in a melee slot and not only does he get constant chances to level, but he also is casting when there are casters present. I understand the game isnt an experience based leveling system, my lvl 27 Samurai actually popped a level on the first floor while making his way to lvl five for some grinding. I would just like some assurance that I am doing the right thing with these Elves as opposed to swapping out for Mages or dare I say it... Kobold Mages... *shudders at the frailty*.

Elf anything is pretty hard to level (there is a price to be paid for immortality). Sages and Rangers are difficult as well and combining them with the Elf race is really going to be tough. I really like Kobold Mages, myself. You can level them much more quickly.

John,

I agree that power at a high rate of speed is always enticing, but at higher levels do the Kobold Mages suffer? It seemed one single bad luck moment killed mine pretty quick. Was that just shear bad luck?

What killed your mage? Since the mage should always in the back of the party (I hope!) they are only vulnerable to spell casters/fire breathers (and pits/trapped boxes). When I meet spell casters that can do serious damage, I always set the speed to the minimum and try and take them out before they can get off a spell. The Priest spell 'MINABOR' (Rods) is very useful for taking out a specific monster group (particularly if there are only a few as the damage done by 'MINABOR' is divided amongst all the monsters in the group). Not that 'FIEMINAT' (Fireball) no longer damages the party, it is useful as well. At high level 'FIEMINAMOR' is a devastating spell as it can take out multiple groups at once. You can also have the mage cast 'FIETOKSHEF' (Fire Protection) which provides some protection against fire attacks (e.g. fireball and fire breath), and 'GEITORGA' (Levitate) which provides protection against pits.

Also remember that unless you are philosophically opposed to them, the Portal Gems will allow you to recover from a death. Just return to the Castle before you attempt to raise and create a portal. Then try the raise and if it fails, restore the game and try again.

Hi Hellion, as John mentioned you should always keep your spell casters in the rear of the party. I also buff everyone to the best of my ability: protect party for all, strength and haste for my meleers, shield, fire protect and levitate for my magic using spell casters. For in depth info on just how difficult it is to level an elven Sage (or Ranger for the Beta version) check out Snafaru's Fan Page and guides at http://www.zimlab.com/oubliette/ipad/index.htm. Peter Liska also has an excellent guide for the original game (and much of the information is still useful) that discusses End Game Strategies: http://oub.liska.ca/files/Oubliette_Strategy.pdf

My current Beta Party is composed of: Tai Chi a Lvl 63 Halfling Saurai, Matilda a Lvl 62 Ogre Hirebrand, 4 more Halfling Samurais Herc and Akasagarbha both lvl 56, Nantembo lvl 54, and Maitreya lvl 53. The Party is rounded out by Bombur a lvl 56 Dwarf Sage (534 Hits and Maxed out Magic Spells) and 3 Halfling Rangers: Jaret lvl 56, Brandibuck lvl 59 and Merriadoc lvl 53.

My party with the original ipod version 1.2 game consists of five hardy adventurers:

Lao Tzu a Lvl 102 Halfling Samurai
Zhuangzi a Lvl 94 Kobold Samurai
M'ogre a Lvl 70 Ogre Mage (906 hits -31 AC with Armor, Staff and a shield spell)
Merri a Lvl 80 Halfling Sage
Larinya a Lvl 64 Kobold Sage

I'm really looking forward to continuing my adventures in the next Beta and the final version 2.0.

Lao Tzu,
Thank you for the link for that wonderful guide. It explains a lot! Also, lets just say your endgame party makes me feel pretty weak, but gives me hope in my Samurai and Sage. Seems my poor paladin may get relegated to new char leveling duties.

FYI, based on my testing, I don't think you will need as high level party as Lao Tza's to beat level 11 (I have done it with less).

John,
Thanks for that. I don't feel so horribly underpowered now. One thing I have been wondering about, an earlier post detailed a person with a Lvl 101 character. Seems incredibly fun and a personal triumph to reach that goal, but is there a cutoff for our mere mortals where leveling becomes purely for ones own self edification?

If you have the right classes and the right equipment you should be able to beat level 11 with characters under level 40.
