In 2.0, can any race become a Ranger? Or just Human and Elf?

Second question, since Samurais are (arguably) O/P and Ninjas are (arguably) pointless, I'm wondering if both situations could be improved somewhat by swapping their level-up bonuses. Given all the advantages Sams have over Ninjas, it seems odd that Sams have ++++ Hit Point increase when they level and Ninjas only have +. Seems like it would make more sense of those were reversed. Or maybe +++ for Ninja and ++ for Sam. I realize that Ninjas are mathematically somewhat easier to level than Sams, but in reality Sams cover alot of that disadvantage by being able to stay in a fight longer (more HP) and being able to Dispel, Hold and cast a few attack spells.

Any race can be a Ranger in 2.0.

As for the Ninja question, you make some good points and I agree that Ninjas are somewhat useless (I have never run one). However, it was never our intent to 'balance' the classes, and I am not sure the the change you suggest would really make the Ninja any more worth while. Perhaps you should think of it as a challenge to build parties with the lesser classes and still be able to succeed?

Aside from the obvious (HP, stats, spells, item allowances), are there inherent differences between classes as far as game mechanics goes? Does the engine add extra damage or evade or hit-prob based solely on class? Or is it all driven off the stats and items?

Well, there are things like the Samurai's 'auto kill' that are class specific.
