I'm trying to decide which way to go:

At what level does a ranger get STK?

Aside from the ability to cast at higher levels, does a ranger have any other advantage over a Nina? Vice versa?

Would there a benefit from putting one of each in the vanguard?

Rangers are the most versatile characters, they can fight, and use both Magic and Priest spells. Ninjas do have an advantage in that they can disarm trapped boxes, although they are not as good at it as Thieves.

Okay, but you still haven't answered my question. When do rangers get StK? If they don't get it until they're fairly advanced, then the ninjas' advantage of having it from the start might be significant.

I'm sorry, what is STK?

I assume it's swing to kill, so no. Rangers can go at the front, but I find having them in positions 3-6 is best as they can handle themselves if the front guy goes down without ever being the best at it. Obviously the samurai is the best front line character in the long run, but in the early stages hirebrands and paladins are useful for the better armour they can use. Ninjas can hit hard but will be poorly armoured unless you have some very late game items

Cowboy is correct, Rangers never get 'Swing to Kill' (unless they have the right weapon). Personally, I don't like Rangers all that much as they are hard to level. I normally just use Mages and Priests to get my spells. For fighters, Samurai are the best at high levels (although they can be pretty vulnerable at lower levels). My typical party consists of 2 Samurai, 2-3 Mages, 3 Priests and a Thief, and my most recent goal is to have the ALL be Kobolds!

Thanks, Cowboy and Admin, for your informative answers.

I understand your remarks about melee artists, Admin, but I don't get the bit about priests and mages. Of course, you know the formulas and I don't; and you have vastly more experience than I; but in my own nonetheless not inconsiderable experience, sages level in magic and priest spells at least as fast as do those two specialists in their own specialities. So why not use the more versatile class?

That is not true, both Mages and Priests level faster than Sages. That is the trade-off, combined skills = slower leveling. Of course I don't have that much time to play/test, and I therefore look for characters that level fast. Your mileage might vary.

There's been talk in this thread and others about using all-kobald teams.

I tend to play in a very leisurely way, not taking my party to a new level until I feel secure in doing so. For that reason I've been using all-elf teams. Were I to use kobolds, what are the odds that all of them would make it, longevity-wise, to and beyond the final battle?

Since I changed the resting to be in weeks instead of months, I have never had any problems with aging, even with Kobolds. I suspect, however, that I do push the limits of their ability more than some would, but that's where the fun is imho. I remember in the original Oubliette, we were always going deeper than we should, and usually regretted it. In that game, there were no temporal gems, and if you failed raise, you started over.
