the priest spell's hold person/charm monster seem to put the mob's as a companion for the priest instead of the frontliners even if the mob being charmed/held isn't a spellcaster.

This is actually correct, only the summon spells will attach a monster to the front line fighters.

so is this as designed?, or a bug?, 'cause what's the purpose of "charming, or holding" someone if they wont' be able to take hits or attack?

Well you do get experience from holding monsters, and it eliminates the threat. Also Priests can wear Chain and use a shield, so they are not bad fighters. I have built up some priests by putting them at the front and having them hack away.

You can also choose which monsters you hold and only go for ones that have ranged attacks (this is not true of summon).
